Orthopaedic Surgeon

Dr Sabarul Afian Mokhtar is the Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery (Spine) at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He is currently the President of Malaysian Orthopaedic Association(MOA).He is the founding member and the past President of the Malaysia Spine Society. He is the council member and head of Special Interest Group for Education, Malaysian Orthopaedics Association. He obtained his Medical Degree and Orthopaedic Specialty training from UKM. He continued subspecialty training in the field of Spine Surgery with Professor Shoichi Kokubun at Tohoku University, Sendai, Japan and a PhD Clinical Fellow for Spine Surgery at the Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Macquarie University, Sydney. He was the pioneer orthopaedic surgeon working and doing research at the Macquarie University Hospital and completed his PhD entitled “Development of a Model for Assessment and Predicting Outcome in Surgery for Degenerative Disorder of the Lumbosacral Spine” where his research and practices mainly focused on the ageing spine. He has served as the head of Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Deputy Dean at Faculty of Medicine UKM, Deputy Director of UKM Medical Centre and Deputy Director, Pro Vice Chancellor of Medical and Health Campus UKM. He is actively involved in the undergraduate and postgraduate education at both national and international level by being the member of the National Orthopaedic Curriculum Committee (NOCC) and ASEAN Orthopaedic Association (AOA) Education Committee. He has established the Fracture Liaison Service in Malaysia which was awarded the Silver Award in 2019 and Gold Award in 2022 by the International Osteoporosis Federation (IOF). He has presented and authored in a significant number of scientific papers that are testimony to his clinical and research interests in spinal disorders, pain management and osteoporosis. He has been conferred with numerous awards for his services, academic and research achievement in the field.
